PRESS RELEASE
November 21, 2005
Provided by the office of Dr. Frances Jones.
The Davie County Board
of Education has named Dr. Stephen E. Lane as their new superintendent
effective January 1, 2006. He was given a four year contract.
Dr. Lane is currently the Deputy Superintendent for the Iredell-Statesville
Schools where he oversees the daily operation of that district’s 35
schools. He has extensive experience in the management of personnel,
finance, legal services, child nutrition, transportation, maintenance,
construction, curriculum, student services, public relations,
student redistricting, and information systems. Prior to being named
Deputy Superintendent he served as Executive Director of School Operations,
Director of Transportation and high school principal. He has
also served as the Chief Academic Officer for the Camp Lejeune Schools
and a social studies teacher and coach. Dr. Lane has distinguished himself
as a major in the US Marine Corps.
The new superintendent holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership
from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a Master of
Arts in Education, Gardner-Webb University, a Masters of Business
Administration with a concentration in financial management from
National University, San Diego, California and a Bachelor of Science
in Education and History from Appalachian State University.
Active in his community, Dr. Lane serves on the Board of Directors
for the Rotary Club, Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, Teen Health,
Dove House and United Way. He is on the Board of Trustees for Rose
Chapel United Methodist Church of Statesville. Lane and his wife
Terri, a middle school teacher, have three children. Two children
are high school students and their older son works for Bank of America.
When contacted, teachers and administrators in the Iredell-Statesville
Schools described Dr. Lane as student-oriented and an inclusive leader,
one who brings staff and community into dialogue when making decisions.
According to Dr. Lane, 99% of parent and community concerns are
now solved in his office. The new superintendent has in-depth experience
in new school construction. He has supervised the construction
of one high school, one middle school and three elementary schools as
well as the renovation of eight other district schools. He has had the
responsibility of coordinating the redistricting efforts of the Iredell-Statesville
Schools including the rezoning of the high school attendance
following construction of a new high school.
In making this decision the Davie County Board of Education gave
serious consideration to those traits that were expressed by staff
and community members during the open forums and through input forms.
These included accessibility, a strong presence in schools and communities,
open and honest communication, a proven track record of success in
past positions and the ability to make hard, but fair, decisions.
Dr. Lane will relocate to Davie County prior to his first official
day on the job, January 2, 2006.
